Non-Traditional Defensive Hapkido is more of a grappling type of martial art similar to Kenpo Kung-Fu Karate, Jujutsu, or Judo. It is an adult only martial art. It incorporates the same types of kicks, punches, strikes and blocks as Tae Kwon Do with different types of take-downs or sweeps, joint locks or other types of lock-ups, pressure-point attacks, some ground grappling, and elements from Eskrima or Kali (that is, stick, knife, and gun defenses).
It is only used for self-defense. Hapkido does not condone or encourage the use of or desire for violence. As with any self-defense based martial art, it seeks to give students and practitioners of the art the necessary skills to feel confident that they will be able to protect themselves if placed in a situation of threat or danger.
Kinderhook Martial Arts and Fitness Center offers varying types of martial art disciplines. We primarily teach Tae Kwon Do and Defensive Hapkido, though elements of Kenpo Karate, Jujutsu, Judo, and other forms of martial arts are injected. We feel that a student should not limit themselves, and should be curious of other forms of martial arts, incorporating elements of those disciplines that the student feels comfortable with into their regimen. We are dedicated to and encourage the expansion of one’s knowledge.
